Good holiday preparation is not only important for you, but also for your dog – especially if they are travelling with you. Here is a checklist with tips on how to prepare your dog for your holiday:
1. Check your destination and accommodation
Are dogs allowed? Make sure that dogs are expressly permitted in your accommodation.
Climate & surroundings: Is the climate suitable for your dog? Are there opportunities for exercise?
2. Health & documents
Vaccination certificate & microchip: An EU pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination is mandatory when travelling abroad.
Tick protection & worming: Especially important when travelling south (Mediterranean diseases!).
Visit to the vet: Health check 1–2 weeks beforehand, refresh any necessary vaccinations.
3. Prepare for the journey
Car journey: Get your dog used to longer journeys, ideally with breaks every 2 hours.
Transport box or harness: For safety and comfort in the car, train or plane.
Travel sickness? Consult your vet if necessary – there are remedies for travel sickness.
4. Packing list for your dog
Food & bowls
Water bottle for on the go
Favourite toy or blanket
Leash, harness, muzzle (e.g. mandatory in some countries)
Poop bags
Tick tweezers
Medication & first aid kit
Pet passport + chip number
5. Once you arrive
Maintain rituals: Same feeding times and walks help your dog settle in.
Never leave your dog unattended: new surroundings can be stressful or dangerous.
Check your dog's identification: collar with your holiday address/telephone number.
